NOGDUS October 2009 Micro-Game Development Contest

Hey Look! Something new for NOGDUS! :D

Here is how it works, you have 48 hours (from October 30 through October 31 GMT -6 US Central Time) to create a game that has the logical flow of the specified flowchart (see below) and that uses all items in the item list (again, see below)

Flowchart

Your game must follow this basic flow-chart.
You may throw in as much extra as you want, but the logical flow cannot be changed. (If the flowchart says there is a choice to be made, and have only 2 options, thats all you can have.)
Additional scenes may be added, as long as they are intermediate to the main scenes that are shown in the flowchart.

Item List
All items listed must be used in some manner in your game. They don't need to serve a functional purpose, but if they do that will make your game better. ;D

Items may be used more than once, and can serve any purpose, and be implemented in any way. (as a picture on a wall counts)

  • Rope
  • Gold
  • Matches
  • Candle

Entries will be judged for 1 week after the contest ends, and every NOGDUS member gets to vote.
So if you want to vote, you need to get a membership account! (its free!)

Everyone is encouraged to join in on IRC in the #nogdus room on the irc.afternet.org server.

Reminds me of ZZT/Megazeux. I'll tell you what would be fun: if there was a game creator we could use and make stuff with in accordance with the competition. I'll make a thread about that.

Well the thing is, the flowchart is implementation independent.
Its up to the creator to decide what a "scene" is.
Some people are intending to implement a "scene" as an entire level or location.
The whole idea is that you have 3 logical branches that lead to 4 different conclusions.
In my entry, I decided to have 3 bad endings and one good ending.

I could always put something together in ZZT, couldn't I?

Howabout this:
  • player approaches a pit. A rope is next to it.
  • If they don't acquire the rope first, they die
  • player finds a candle, matches at the bottom of the pit
  • if player tries to enter the next room without lighting the candle, they die.
  • ... (maybe a troll in the next room wants money?)
Sounds like "choose your own adventure". The problem is this: it's not very fun. Usually contests only seem to work when they require a certain theme, or a certain set of (very broad, but often thought about) limitations. Actually the biggest problem is the matches... matches = modern day, in all cases. I think just the candle, rope, and gold would be enough.

Actually I'm thinking about a sewer kinda theme now... where you could use matches either to light candles or to light a flamethrower-type weapon. The problem is the multiple endings bit. Thing is, how would I make the tools?
