I just came across an AWESOME little tool called espeak.

On an Ubuntu Linux system, open a terminal and type in the following:

$ sudo apt-get install espeak

and now you have espeak installed, here are some things to try.

$ espeak "This is a test" > thisisatest.wav
$ espeak -p 10 -s 30 "This is a test" > thisisatest2.wav
$ ls ~ | espeak > homedirectory.wav

The -p is for changing the pitch of the voice, and the -s is to change the speed that the voice speaks at.
Have fun!
And post links to some cool speech WAVs that you have made!
