As you may know i have the book called sams teach yourself game programming in 24 hours.
I am making a little game based on the game engine and chapters of the game. I find this book pretty simple and organized...now the samples of books somehow always give trouble. Got them compiled and running under GCC but spent all day trying to get em working with Dev C++(wanted more portability, free compiler and so on). I'm running Vista
